Coincidentally his teachings also apply to poker. You will understand why as you read along:

Committing a mistake is not a crime

All poker players, even the best ones, commit mistakes. You do not dwell so much upon them. Just make sure you evaluate where you went wrong and making the adjustments as necessary. Do not be emotional but review and analyze.

Revenge is not a good thing

When you think of revenge, Confucius reminds us to dig two graves. Thinking of getting even is destructive and will not do anything good to your game.

It is okay to go slow but do not stop

Even Confucius tells poker players to chill and have patience when you are feeling to eager to move up. Poker is not an easy game so have the patience and just play your game.

Respect begets respect

When you respect yourself and stick to your game plan, it will pay off in the long run. No matter how people treat you, respect your skills, respect theirs, and even if they do not, you will see the chips coming your way.

Look back

Confucius tells us to study what happened in the past to define what is ahead of you. Read about poker and learn the game. Review your history and see which aspects of your poker game needs some tuning.

Think of anger and its consequences

When you feel like you are losing control and nearing tilt. Think of what is to happen to your bank roll. Pause before your next action. Calm down and get the a hold of your game.

The continuation bet is becoming a very familiar on the poker tables. It is a very effective move may be stemming from its innate simplicity.

A continuation bet is a bet you make if you are a pre-flop raiser. You do a continuation bet even if you did not improve on the cards that you are holding. For example, you have an A-K and then the cards flopped are 4-9-Q, you take advantage of the situation and bet although you did not make a pair or anything.

The strategy of making a continuation bet is very effective since most likely your opponents will not make a pair upon flop in 2 of 3 times. Simply, your opponents will fold their hand every time you make a continuation bet and they didn’t make anything out of the flop.

Basics on the continuation bet

When you do a continuation bet, a good size will be 2/3 or ¾ of the pot. You also need to put into mind the reads of everyone around you.

When you make a 2/3 or ¾ continuation bet then you make a very strong and aggressive impression that you have the best hand on the table. You will scare your opponents so they will fold. Betting more than the pot may be risking much than what is needed when a smaller bet will just have the same consequence.

You need to assess if you have strong opponents on the table and use this as basis if you can do a continuation bet. At lower levels of poker games, the players have the tendency to call on you bets. As much as possible, you should avoid a continuation bet if the players are calling stations. The same goes for highly skilled opponents who expect you to C-bet almost any flop. If you have Michael Binger or Paul Wasicka facing you, you’re in deep trouble anyway, though.

You should also take into consideration what comes out of the flop. Determine if the texture of the flop will benefit you or if it strengthens the position of your opponents.

Other things to consider is your position and the number of players risking it in the pot.

When you do a blocking bet, you are not in a good position and you want to see a river card or a showdown cheaply. Good use of a blocking bet will result to your opponent not calling a hefty bet that you cannot call. It can also be a big waste of money if used incorrectly.

A blocking bet is a bet that you make which is smaller than the average bet you make. This will somehow reduce the amount of chips you will need to see what card comes out next.

Overview of the blocking bet

Remember that a blocking bet move will only work if you are not in a good position. There are two situations when you use a blocking bet:

When you get a drawing hand on play

When you have vulnerable cards on the river

Let say you have a J-10 (Heart) and the turn comes out as A,2(heart), K(diamond), and 9(spades). What you want to do is see the next card without risking too much of chips and without having your opponent bet too big. So what you will do is bet about 1/3 of the pot so you block your opponent from betting big. Remember, when you miss your draw on the river it will be best most likely to fold. But if you complete the cards you needed, then you will be raking in those chips.

Mistakes you should avoid when blocking bet

You do not do blocking bet when you simply want to block a bet. Keen opponents will be able to sensed this and be aggressive enough to take away your chips. The move is not right when your reason is not right.

When you sense a counter from your opponent, you can mix value bets so your opponent will be confused if you are just making blocking bets. This strategy will force them to commit a mistake, and that spells profit for you.
